How do I get a Cosmetology or Esthetics Instructor License in North Carolina?

Alexander Paul Institute is interested in helping those who wish to become instructors. We have included
information on licensing below, and we would like to provide more resources and guidance to help potential
instructors obtain their license.

There are 2 ways to become a licensed cosmetology instructor in North Carolina or to become an esthetician instructor in North Carolina:

  1. Get Licensed in North Carolina (Discussed First Below)
  2. Get Licensed in Another State and Transfer Your Teaching License to North Carolina (Discussed Later in This Section)

METHOD 1: BECOME LICENSED IN NORTH CAROLINA AS A COSMETOLOGY OR ESTHETICS TEACHER

Cosmetology Instructor
Cosmetology Instructors can teach both Cosmetology and Esthetics. The requirements to become licensed are:

  1. Send a form to the NC Board of Cosmetic Art Examiners certifying that you "have been in active practice of
cosmetic art in a cosmetic art shop for a period equivalent to five years of fulltime work immediately prior to
the signing of this application." OR Complete an 800 hour Cosmetology Instructor Course.
  2. Pass Written & Practical Cosmetology Instructor Exam
  3. Pay Appropriate Fees for Your License ($20)

Esthetics Instructor
The requirements to become licensed are:

  1. Send a form to the NC Board of Cosmetic Art Examiners certifying that you "have been in active practice of
esthetics in a cosmetic art shop for a period equivalent to three years of fulltime work immediately prior to
the signing of this application." OR Complete a 650 hour Esthetics Instructor Course.
  2. Pass Written & Practical Esthetics Instructor Exam
  3. Pay Appropriate Fees for Your License ($20)

Taking the Instructor Exam
The written exam consists of questions derived from a teaching methodology curriculum such as Milady Master
Educator. We can help you purchase this text. Topics of the written exam include classroom management, learning
styles, lesson planning, etc.

The practical exam consists of 2 parts:

  1. Theory Lesson (20 Minutes): You are provided a theory topic which you present using visual aids such as flip
charts, easles, etc. You prepare a lesson plan to be handed to the evaluator.
  2. Practical Demonstration (30 Minutes): You are given a topic to present in a practical demonstration. You
must have a lesson plan and demonstrate proper sanitation.

We can provide resources and guidance for taking and applying for the exam. You can find more information about
the exam at http://dlroope.com/north_carolina_exam_information.cfm

METHOD 2: BECOME LICENSED IN ANOTHER STATE AS AN INSTRUCTOR AND TRANSFER THE TEACHER LICENSE TO NC

In many cases, this method is easier than becoming licensed in NC as described above.

This method is more appropriate for cosmetologists and estheticians who are interested in teaching but are unable to attend a teaching program and have been working for less than 5 years as a cosmetologist and less than 3 years as an estheticican.

The method works as follows:

  1. Become a Licensed Cosmetology & Instructor in Another State
  2. Apply for Reciprocity to Transfer Your License From Other State to NC

We help provide resources to instructor candidates interested in using this method to get licensed.
